The Tubeworm: Annoying Orange: Time to Burn

Welcome to the Tubeworm!
In case you didn't know...The writer of this blog is a big fan of the Annoying Orange, a web series turned multimedia franchise created by Dane Boedigheimer. It chronicles the adventures of an Annoying Talking fruit and his friends as the meet up with different fruits and vegetables usually resulting in the death of the character they just met. Is it 'High Art'? Probably not...I suppose that judgement is reserved for the cultural analysts of the 22nd century.
Time to Burn is an episode from the 2012 season of Annoying Orange. I won't give to much away about the plot but the basic summary is as follows: Orange chugs a bottle of hot sauce, becomes a living rocket. Hijinks ensue.
While there may not be much to analyze in a three-minute Youtube video, I do feel like this episode deserves a closer look than the other episodes of the series.
When the web show was starting out the episodes took a pretty formulaic approach. Orange would be doing his own thing then a new fruit or vegetable would be placed on the counter. Orange would annoy him, using  puns mostly, and then the visiting vegetable or fruit would perish usually by the way of being sliced by a knife.
But as the show progressed things started changing. More recurring characters started appearing, such as Pear, Midget Apple, and Marshmallow as well a few others. This expanded the show's possibilities in various ways and allowed more opportunities for storytelling than the earlier episodes.
This is what makes Time to Burn unique, in that Orange while still being the focal point of the narrative is largely absent from character interactions, that task has now fallen on to two recurring characters, Pear and Midget Apple. This allows for a (slightly) more in depth look into the personalities of these two characters as they react to the circumstances that Orange is experiencing. A good way to explore the characters is to remove one of the main characters and see how they react. This lends itself to character development, while it may not be to deep in a show such as the Annoying Orange but it does add a little bit of flavor where it would have been really easy to stick to the same formula.
