Pear’s Extreme Challenge: The Baby Food Challenge

****

The Annoying Orange is one of the most successful channels on Youtube and true to form of many great success stories, the internet franchise has created spin-offs of the original product. These spinoffs take the form of separate web channels starring the various characters of the Annoying Orange: Pear, Midget Apple, Grapefruit, etc. Today, we will look at one of the Worm’s favorites: the Pear Channel.

Premise: The main premises of Pear’s Youtube channel is his extreme challenges. In the main show…Pear is the straight man foil to the irreverent nature of Orange. This make his character funny, but this also makes him boring, a fact he wishes to dispute, so he takes it upon himself to perform “Extreme Challenges” in order to prove that he is not boring. He takes on various challenges suggested by the commentators. Some are extreme, like fighting Godzilla and others are based on Youtube challenges, such as the cinnamon challenge and playing the indie hit, Five Nights at Freddie’s. This in of itself is actually pretty amusing as a cartoon character performs real life dares, it can lead to some amusing consequences.

The Baby Food Challenge is when challengers consume baby food and have to guess what flavor it is. Since baby food is really only palatable to infants, the reaction to the flavor and what it is can be amusing. (I imagine it is more the texture rather than the flavor). Anyway…we meet our hero about to consume his baby food, content with the knowledge that he will not get horrifically injured due to the challenge. He takes a bite of the baby food and discovers that he actually likes it. Then the challenge emerges and he has to discover what the flavor is.

Pear comes to the horrifying revelation that his baby food is mashed pears. He freaks out, calling himself a cannibal, screams and moves off the screen to cry.

Of all of the Extreme Challenges, this particular episode is one of the best. It is not the flashiest and Pear doesn’t get injured in hilarious ways but it works the best just through its sheer simplicity. The way Pear screams is particularly funny as evinced by previous episodes but also because of all of the extreme challenge videos, this one is the most grounded. His reaction is very much how a lot us would react if we discovered we were eating ourselves. It is just so understated that we can’t help but laugh at it.

Sometimes less is more!
