NCIS: “Devil’s Triad”

Season 11, Episode 10

*****

The Story: The team investigate the death of a Marine and discover a link between the current boyfriend of Diane Sterling, Gibbs and Tobias Fornell’s ex-wife while NSA agent Ellie Bishop struggles to adjust being a member of the NCIS team. (from Wikipedia)

The Good: Even if the plots and technical details in shows like NCIS are completely ludicrous, their saving grace is their characters. Each one, from Gibbs to DiNozzo to Abby are all so unique and multifaceted that we love to see what hilarious hijinks they get up to next. This is what makes this episode fun even if the plot is somewhat lacking, more on that later. Just seeing all of the personalities just bounce off one another is extremely amusing and what some it would say is the primary sources of comedy in general.

It is especially amusing to see the normally calm and composed Gibbs, becoming all flustered and frustrated at the antics of his friends and their daughter. To get the best out of a character is to challenge them and take them out of their comfort zone.

Speaking of the daughter: Emily Fornell looks like a lot of fun and ScreenWorm hope she gets an episode with her as a central character. She has typical teenage snark but there is a lot of intelligence there as well. Emily Fornell has a lot of potential.

Ellie Bishop played Emily Wickersham is the new female lead after the departure of Ziva David, and she really is a breath of fresh air. She has no emotional baggage, is fairly well adjusted, as is young and eager to please. This gives her the image of an eager puppy but she quickly comes into her own as a team member

ScreenWorm wonders is she is a natural blond though?

Anyway: Bishop has taken up the probie title from McGee, and she fulfills the role as the eager rookie, but while she may be the new kid on the block, she was a federal agent for some time and knows her way around an investigation, she may know a little too much and lets the characters know it.

The Flaws: Diane is very funny and very appealing in the ‘lioness’ theme her character has going for her but at times she is annoying as her personality is rather abrasive at times as the flip side of the lioness theme. She does not strike ScreenWorm as being the type to admit wrongdoing on her part. Its a good thing that she is not a regular as her attitude would get old very fast.

As far as the main plot, its not a terrible plot but it’s fairly predictable. The characters are what pulls the story through but if that was taken away, it would be a pretty boring episode.

Final Verdict: Story is nothing without good characters to carry it. If you want a good exposes on the characters that make NCIS work so well, this episode is the way to go.
